Overview
This summer I spent two months in in Puerto Rico to reconnect with my roots and understand first hand how the local government worked. I documented post-hurricane Maria life and met with teachers, business owners, farmers, artists, and students. Each story is unique and offers insight into different parts of the island and it's culture, but they all share similar themes– colonialism and regrowth. I want to highlight these stories in a docu-series to preserve them and their place in history.

Summary

Hey there, internet friends!  Thanks for stopping by. My name is Sharilyn Vera and I'm a filmmaker currently living in Los Angeles.  A couple years ago I began researching the origins of the economic crisis in Puerto Rico. There were stories all over the news of protesters, budget cuts, and government corruption. I wrote about what was going on here.    When I was younger I would go to Puerto Rico over the summers. I would hang out with my cousins, go hiking, visit the beach, and then come back to the states. About one year ago, I decided to go back to Puerto Rico and stay there for a while to reconnect with my roots, my family, and understand first hand how the local government worked. I packed my bags, brought my camera, and bought a one way ticket to San Juan Puerto Rico to stay with my grandma for a couple months.  On the day before my flight, hurricane Maria hit the island. I couldn't contact my family for weeks. It was crazy. And when I finally could contact my family, I would get updates from my cousin saying, "I've been waiting in line for a bag of ice for 9 hours".  There was no way I was getting to the island. So instead I waited until I knew I would have a place to stay with electricity.  A few months later I finally made it! I documented my whole experience on instagram, film, drone, and 4k with my camera man, Ryan (Seriously we got some pretty sweet drone footage and I can't wait to share more). We interviewed teachers, farmers, business owners, artists, and experienced what it was like to live day to day life in post Maria.  When I was there, I felt like I was witnessing a historic moment of regrowth. Puerto Rico is also in the process of literally regrowing– the crops are finally coming back. And they are building a stronger, more sustainable environment. I met some truly incredible people, and these people have a story to tell. I plan on coming back and diving deeper into these stories.  Each episode of this series will feature a new subject and a different story. I shot an amazing interview with a bar manager named Carlos. He told me the most fascinating story about the post hurricane dry law, how the bar turned into group therapy, and how they managed to keep ingredients fresh with no power. His story will be the first episode in this installment of the docu-series. For the rest of the stories, I need to spend more time with the individuals I met.  Thats where you come in! I need help funding my return to the island and the costs of production to follow up with these inspiring people. You're definitely going to want to hear their stories and be a part of putting those stories out into the world.  Thanks for hearing me out and helping me out!

What We Need & What You Get

As you saw from the video, I got to spend some time in Puerto Rico this summer. In the two months I was there, I was able to film for about 10 days. During those 10 days, I met and interviewed lots of people from different backgrounds. However this footage doesn't tell the complete story.  If you donate, you'll be allowing me to work in post production for one episode, and you'll also be giving me the opportunity to return to the island with my crew and wrap up a second episode.  Donations will go towards travel, transportation, food, post production, paying the crew, and housing.

The Impact

There is already so much misinformation to the American public. It's important that we hear these stories and experiences from Puerto Ricans themselves.  Like I mentioned in the video, understanding our past can help us resolve issues of the present. The colonial history of Puerto Rico has deeply effected the economy, environment, politics, and culture of the entire island and the states. Post-hurricane maria is not the first time the island has been neglected. Historically, Puerto Rico has been used for politically driven business deals, military testing, and abuse of the land. Most people don't know about any of this, but this docu-series would be covering that, as well as highlighting beautiful stories of the culture and revival.

Challenges

I originally I thought that I would want to do 6 episodes, but after gaining some interest from production companies that I would want to team up with, I decided I'd like to go back and get capture 2 full epsodes of a docu-series that I can shop around to larger media outlets. This will allow me have a bigger platform to share the series on as well as focus less on trying to get funding from the friends, family, and the general public.  My goal is to have this docu-series shared on larger media outlets, which can be a challenge, but I'm confident that the quality and importance of the content is deserving of a great platform.
