Hello! What this is about

I’m a Toronto-based documentary filmmaker. The UNDENIABLY amazing Nora Young is my inspiration for this film.

About Nora

When I first met Nora, I knew right away there was something special about her. And as I got to know her more, I discovered that not only was she a force of nature with an incredible love of life, but she also had been a TOP athlete, in many sports, during something I’d never heard of – the Golden Age of Women’s Sports(1920s and 30s) in North America – of which Nora was an extremely important example. And then when my team and I began filming Nora – she was 95 – I was wowed by the sheer number of her amazing, historically significant athletic achievements, particularly in cycling, her favourite sport. She was one of Canada's most important early female competitive cyclists - if not the most important. Check out this recent media coverage about Nora and our film: Toronto Star: Toronto’s audacious ‘girl cyclist’ left riders — and stereotypes — in the dust Dandyhorse: New Film Aims to Animate the Story of Cycling Pioneer Nora Young Two-Wheeled Politics Blog, An Undeniably Important Female Cycling Pioneer Pedal Magazine: Cycling Canada Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2018 Inductees Canadian Cycling Magazine: Three athletes make up the 2018 class of the Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame

About this film

UNDENIABLY YOUNG is about Nora, the “Golden Age” and a historically significant men’s Six-Day Race that she was a part of in 1936 at Maple Leaf Gardens. A small group of the top female cyclists of the time were invited to put on a demonstration race on a steeply banked velodrome track – a phenomenally daring thing for them to do, given it was their FIRST time track racing. The atmosphere was incredible – six-day bike racing in the 1930s attracted tens of thousands of spectators (everyone from gamblers to film stars to office workers), was dangerous and exciting, and featured celebrity male riders competing for big, big money. And yes, those guys were racing (in teams of two at least) for six-days – straight. Nora didn’t ride for six-days at this event – but what she DID do was remarkable and changed history. You’ll have to see my film to learn why!

Where the money goes

We have some wonderful funders already: thank you to several very special anonymous donors and to the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the National Film Board of Canada's Filmmaker's Assistance Program (Montreal Animation Studio). We still need to raise $15,000 to complete the film, as the costs of animation are high, which makes this a more ambitious and expensive film to make than many short film projects. This will help our film reach the highest possible standards of production. My team and I have already gone far in developing this story, and we are well underway with production. Every dollar you contribute will be used immediately in helping us go the rest of the way. The funds raised in this campaign will go towards:

Why support

  • Because you think this film is important and needs to be made!
  • Because you believe in us! And in Nora.
  • OMG, great perks! Fun items from Danica, "Bike Racing's Most Attractive Girl" vintage photo postcards, one-of-a-kind keepsakes like film artwork or the chance to BE A CHARACTER in the animation, and an unforgettable film-screening event in the Toronto Danforth neighbourhood, hosted by our friends at Sustainable
  • Note: you don't have to choose a perk. If you wish to simply donate, choose "BACK IT" at the top of this page, and then put in your donation amount instead of selecting a perk.

The impact

Early female cyclists and athletic pioneers like Nora are almost completely unknown today. This has got to change!
  • Because “you can’t be what you can’t see.”
  • Because, while we’ve come a long way in terms of gender equity in sports, there’s still a long way to go.
  • Because there are so many amazing, inspiring stories from women like Nora prior to 1950… and yet we haven’t had the opportunity to hear them.
And if we don’t preserve them now, they will be lost to history. Where this film will appear: we want this film to be enjoyed, but also used as a learning tool. We will share the film with the public (festivals, online streaming/distribution, community screenings), but we also have a strong focus on educational distribution: primary and secondary schools, and sports and women’s studies programs for post-secondary. We will be creating a study guide for educators to use. And we aim for it to be used by coaches, sports teams, and others who do sports and recreational programming for girls and women (for all young people really).

Other ways to help

It's actually true: any amount you can contribute, no matter how small, really helps (remember how Barack Obama got elected??). Also, every contribution is helpful in increasing our number of backers, which shows others that a lot of people are excited about this film. However, we  totally get it if you can't contribute financially at this time. That's okay because one of the very BEST ways you can help is simply to spread the word about this campaign to your friends, family and networks! This is HUGE support in and of itself.
  1. Tell people why you, personally, find this project exciting! By email, in person, on social media… This is really a MASSIVE contribution. Be sure to send them this link so they find us www.igg.me/at/NoraYoungFilm
  2. Use the Indiegogo share tools at the top of this page!
  3. Follow this Indiegogo campaign page (click on the heart icon at page top right) and also add a note on the Comments page telling others why you've supported this project. This will help our campaign to get more attention on Indiegogo.
  4. Hit us up on social media to show support. Follow/tag @EvokeDocs on Twitter and Instagram, and like “Undeniably Young” on Facebook. #SpiritofNora
When you help, we consider you part of "Team Nora." You really do become SO integral to making this happen. So thank you for all you do. A big #SpiritofNora hug and high five to you!
